Lummis Home-El Alisal

Great place to visit, alot history and good vibe within. Usually a LA Rec Parks Staff on site to answer questions and guide you through encampment. Hours of operation are slim so arrive early...learn about this Highland Park Institution.

This lovely old house is made from river rocks and is a part of the Arroyo Seco's history. I'm not sure when it is open to the public--I've only seen it from the outside, but even that is worth stopping by. Other reviewers have told much of the history, so read them as well.

Went here a long time ago on a free day. It's amazing to see a historic building made completely of rock gathered from the area. So much history in /of / around the site. Pretty cool to check it out.

Home hand built by Charles Lummis. It is said he asked each of his guests to bring up a rock from the nearly arroyo to help with the building. The home gives a feeling of what earliest Los Angeles must have been like. Also visit the nearby Southwest Museum, whose collection was begun by Lummis.

The Docent , Christian I think, was passionate and knowledgeable, adding to the visit. The house is very interesting and the history is well explained. It's interesting, there is no admission as opposed to Heritage Square which is $10, yet this location was the better of the 2 and staffed by much happier people, making the visit to Lummis Home so much better.
