Ok, so let's start off with what Northstar Vets is. Northstar is a level 1 Trama Center for your pet. My dog was whisked into the center with lightening speed and efficiency. Unfortunately my dog had a ruptured spleen due to an aggressive cancer. He showed no signs until that very day. My regular vet sent us here. This place is something special for pet care. They have everything a level 1 trama center should have. My dog was scanned, shaved and had blood drawn from around the Heart all in less then 15mins. They performed CPR and when it was obvious he was gone they let us take the time to accept he was gone. We were taken to a family room and waited for him to be brought in on a gurney so we could make Peace and say goodbye. I didnt realize it at the time as I was in shock and grieving but, a couple of different techs came in to say they were sorry and confirm that this is a common condition that sadly happens frequently. I only realized it later that it was a form of grief counseling. They were checking us out and making sure we were OK.
The total bill for an attempt to revive him, assist us in a time of need and get him sent for cremation was Zero. That's right no charge. Not even a fee for supplies they used. I will be forever grateful for their compassion, service and candor.
Now I know Northstar can get a bad reputation as being expensive and you may feel like you are being taken advantage of at a low point. But, that is not the case. This is what healthcare looks like without insurance. Your pet may indeed be dying and they can extend or save their life. Sadly that comes at a cost you must pay for.
When I took my second dog in with a lung tumor I was presented with options and given a detailed explanation of what they could do and what I could expect. Surgery and chemo therapy would cost 10,000.00 dollars. Yes 10K.
It was explained it would get me six months or I could let the cancer run its course and decide when the time was right.
There was no pressure, no judgement and no fanfare. You get the facts and you decide. For me my dog was going on 12 years. What sealed it for me was the Vet telling me. If we beat this and it does happen. We will be working with a geriatric dog and we will need to be concerned with his hips and joints and his mobility. This was straight up truth. Really paying the money was an option. But, in reality I would have just extended his life for me to hang on a bit more. And if he survived I would have had a pet that was going to be in pain. I was just delaying the inevitable.
Northstar Vets is a 5 star facility. Sadly out of reach for a lot of pet owners. But, they are an option and can do many great things. Just understand that they are a for Profit buisness. And you may have to accept that you cannot afford by no fault of your own to use their services. Dont take your grief and despair out on them by calling them money grabbers or not caring. They are a quality service and do a tough job. They see everyone on there worst day. I felt treated fairly.
For me a dogs only fault is that they die too soon. I had to terminally ill dogs. Both at the end of their lifespans. So I was able to make a tough but, informed decision. You may find yourself with a younger pet. Take the time to get to know your vet and explore your options.
Michelle Jackson showed me around and completely informed me on the questions I had very thoughtful for the time she gave me!
Very big place and knowledgeable staff. Set up the handle just about anything
Stormy Bastelli received great care and vet charged for only what was necessary. She was fine. Just we are worry warts. We love our healthy baby who started her shots 3 weeks ago.
They are doing a great job trying to get my fur baby back on his feet.
