  Ventura Aikikai has been an excellent experience for my daughter and me for the last six months. We set out to find a martial art for self-defense, and after checking out multiple dojos and martial arts, finally decided on Ventura Aikikai. The child and teen class instructors treat the students with respect while encouraging their best effort. Adult classes are offered at various levels, with two beginners/basics classes I greatly appreciate as a new student. Members bring their best selves to class and provide a supportive atmosphere, encouraging you to keep going. In addition to body arts, members may also learn jyo (wooden staff) and bokken (wooden sword), participate in a weekly zazen (meditation) session, and may be invited to practice Iaidō (swordsmanship).

  This place and the people who study within it are wonderful. It's a supportive place to learn self defense.
  
  Belt Sensei, and all the other teachers and students are very friendly, and very willing to help newcomers. I felt extremely comfortable participating from day one. Aikido is highly technical and challenging, but also at its heart a team sport. Comradery is essential. Developing your skill requires that you practice with others, learn from others, and teach others. Although I haven't gotten to that phase where I can teach anyone yet... I'm still the newbie :-)
  
  A few years ago I finished school and started working full time. Since I was a college athlete, this dramatic change in my daily routine started to take its toll, and gradually I started to notice a loss in strength, endurance, balance, and my posture was falling apart (I started walking around with my shoulders in my ears). I joined Ventura Aikikai recently in order to return my body to a healthy state. I have been involved in other martial arts and have played other sports that are highly technical in nature. I was pleasantly surprised with the physical, technical, and mental challenge that Aikido provides.
  
  I highly recommend this dojo.
