What a great place! Of course, it's beautiful. They tell a little about the history of the conservatory, which was nice to know. Everything looked well maintained. I loved walking around. I spent about 2 hours there. It's donation-based and the people there were very friendly.
Wonderful collections of plants organized by type. Hurry and go see the century plant grow though the roof. You can walk traffic fast in an hour or spend two or more if you walk look and take you time. The collection of ferns is marvelous. Free parking. Easy to find.
My children and I always love coming here. We came on a beautiful day. My children love to explore the children's garden with the indoor slide and the outdoor garden. They loved spraying the plants, binoculars, and using the magnifying glass. I always feel peaceful when I am there.
I was invited to a party here and the room was great! We were able to visit the park straight from the room. My son and I visited the children area and the workers there were so nice and welcoming! They played with kids and just made it a great visit. Definitely will be back!
The conservatory is beautiful! Great place to visit with family. It's free to visit, however they do accept donations. Additionally, it's easily accessible by public transit, via the Conservatory-Central Park Drive stop on the Green line, and it's within a mile of the Eisenhower Expressway with parking available on-site. I would personally recommend taking the Green line because traffic on the Ike can get pretty bad, especially if you're coming from the Kennedy or the Dan Ryan.
Just be warned, the neighborhood surrounding the conservatory can be somewhat rough, but they've got security at the conservatory. Additionally, they're only open during the daytime. You shouldn't worry about your safety while visiting the conservatory, as the police maintain strong presence at the conservatory and near the Green line station. However, if you decide to explore the rest of Garfield Park (which I would recommend), just keep your guard up. The rest of the park's worth exploring, but I think that a lot of people are either scared to explore or just don't think to. I would like it if the rest of the park were cleaner, but it's still an impressive park to visit. If you're nervous, just go with another person if you intend to visit the area south of Lake Street. But the conservatory (which is north of Lake, and the CTA Green line) is perfectly safe.
I know you'll love it!
