OK. So my fiancee and I have lived in Portland now for about a year, and we try to eat out once a week but try somewhere new every time. We have driven by Wajan a few times and always meant to give it a shot.
Well, we finally got around to it last night. According to my list, we've eaten out at 65 establishments in just under 1 calendar year. Wajan is now at the very top!!!
The flavors are complex, Indonesian food needs more attention. Its a great mix of Southeast Asian, Indian, and Polynesian flavors. I think being a massive expanse of Islands, there is probably so much food culture in Indonesia that probably varies from island to island and city to city. It's been on the list for travel, and now I'm positive we'll be going someday.
Wajan has won us over and although we don't go back to places often due to wanting to try as many places as possible, I'm fairly certain we will be regulars here!
I had a yellow curry with steamed rice and IT WAS SO GOOD!!! I am an extremely picky eater and i would eat this every day. The waitress was very nice and I'll definitely be coming back again 100% recommend. I ate some of my uncle's fried chicken it was also very good.
This is a hot spot for some damned good food. Wajan was my introductory course to Indonesian cuisine and it was bursting with spice and confectionary dish design. Their fried chicken is killer and their pork belly to die for. Indonesian is like Thai or other Polynesian food and it's grand in it's scale. I am now a devoted disciple for Indonesian cuisine and I hope to visit Jakarta or Bali sometime in the future. Selamat!
The good was great. The outdoor seating was a bit precarious and there was some confusion about food. That said, absolutely excited to go back again soon. I kinda want to try everything on their menu.
Truly one of my favorite places in town. The flavors are impeccable, the service helpful and considerate, and the prices affordable. If I could go everyday, I would.
