YRC Freight

Super helpful and friendly people here. Have so far shipped two pallets of household goods to the Lower 48 with these guys as part of a move out of state. They're the only freight forwarder we were able to find in Alaska that has a nationwide network and ships personal/residential/household goods. (Most other carriers could only get things to Tacoma without the price spiking way up or wouldn't accept non-commercial shipments.)

Rates are WAY cheaper than using a moving company or shipping via the Packaging Store (which uses these guys), as long as you're willing to do a little work to build your shipment on a pallet.

(It's not hard. Many businesses around town have leftover pallets from things they had shipped up from the Lower 48. Get one, and then get boxes that stack and fit as close to the dimensions of the pallet as possible--Walmart, Home Depot/Lowe's, and The Packaging Store all have lots of different sizes. Then, stack the boxes on top of the pallet and shrinkwrap them together and to the pallet, and optionally use some straps to secure the whole bundle. They'll pick up from a home or business for a reasonable fee, or you can do all this in YRC's parking lot if you don't have your own truck and forklift.)

The YRC guys inside (they share an office with SpanAlaska, which is different) are super nice and will walk you through everything.

The barge leaves Anchorage on Sunday and takes about a week to get to Tacoma. Once there, expect your shipment to take a little while to work its way across the country. It's not an expedited method (though you can pay for that), but at a good bit less than a buck a pound (during the timeframe we shipped; prices may vary based on demand, and southbound to Tacoma on an empty barge is cheaper than northbound to Alaska on full boats), there's no better way to ship if you're looking for value and aren't in a hurry.

This company handled our second pallet of home goods from our move from Phoenix, AZ. Everything went without issue and staff were great to work with. My only wish was to have any hours outside of 9-5 M-F for pickup however we were able to work around that limitation this time.
