To Skyline Blvd Parking Lots (4.2 miles): From Portola Road parking lot, follow Ridge Trail and other unnamed trails (see trail map) (1.2 miles) to reach an intersection with Continue along Hamms Gulch Trail (2.6 miles) → turn right on Bay Area Ridge Trail (0.4 miles) to reach a parking lot on Skyline Blvd.
Starting from this Skyline Blvd parking area, as we did, the hike is 10 miles and basin (inverse peak) shaped. It travels down to a river, runs along it for a bit surrounded by majestic redwoods, and then climbs back out through some sunnier hillside trail.
Going through Big Basin involves a couple of short climbs that are tolerable due to the scenery. After completing the Big Basin loop, one gets a false sense of accomplishment; the final ascent up to the Skyline Blvd parking lot still remains to be conquered.
Open green hills, spring foliage blooming, and a gradual incline will take you to the eastern end of the park to the Skyline Blvd parking lot. At this point, you are given a choice between a smoother path on the right, or a yet another incline to the left (Anniversary Trail).
