  THE BEST BAKERY IN METUCHEN! Surprise! Usually the worst muffins, and pastries are at the corner deli. I would NEVER buy a chocolate croissant or cherry turnover at a local deli. They're terrible, but not at the Amboy Deli. Apparently, Steve makes his own pastries, and they are better than any place in town. It's astonishing what passes for fresh pastries in Metuchen. Either no one has any idea some of us know good bread, muffins and pastries, or they buy the cheapest pap available. What passes for pastries at certain ubiquitous coffee and bread chains, (beginning with "Sta" and "Pan", respectively) is below mediocre. Our local bakery also subscribes to flavorless doughy breads and pastries. Once you treat yourself to a homemade muffin or pastry from the Amboy Deli, you'll find yourself running there when you crave an apple, cherry, cheese or chocolate pastry. If word gets out, Steve may end up using the largely vacant room next door as a bakery and cafe. Here's hoping word spreads. Metuchen once had an upscale French pastry shop at Main and MIddlesex, where Danford's used to be, but while their products were picture perfect, they were tasteless. It's sad, because the young owners never asked patrons for tasting feedback. The art was there, but the flavor was not. I vote the Amboy Deli for the best flavor around. And, their chocolate croissants are chock full of wonderful chocolate - not a misleading skimpy dab at each end, but through and through!

  Love this place! I've only had their breakfast, and its great! Friendly staff and good coffee. I go as often as I can.
