Theres a small aquifer/spring on the trail that I've gotten many a drinks from on this trail. It's not a very rigorous trail, but its such a fun trail to venture out on. Santiago peak, although not the most exciting peak, still provides exceptional views of Lake Elsenor to the east and orange county to the west.
16 mile hike with over 4000ft elevation gain from trailhead to Santiago Peak. Rate of climb never gets extremely steep, but it is steady with few breaks. Views from the top include Lake Elsinore and Pacific Ocean. This trail was mostly empty early on a January morning. Peak had temps below 40F.
Good trail, though hard to find on the lower end. Can be slippery if going downhill direction. Only "bad" part is that it ends on a dusty dirt road well before Santiago Peak. If there's much vehicle traffic (usually weekends), you get covered in dust.
This short section of the Holy Jim Trail is difficult but one gets the sense of wonderment with the views. Oak tree canopy , but listen for bicycles because the riders in this area don't use noise apparatus attachments. (Bells)
This hike is a great adventure. It was the first hike I ever went on and I loved it. It was a great first experience and the trail offered multiple photo opportunities. You would LOVE the trail if you are planning on going.
